STRIVE

STRIVE: Building Skills for Life

At KMS, we believe preparing students for the future means developing more than academic knowledge. STRIVE focuses on six durable skills (Self-Direction, Thinking, Responsibility, Interaction, Voice, and Engagement) that students can use across school and throughout their lives. This year, I will highlight one letter at a time in the parent newsletter. We encourage families to talk about these skills at home and point out teachable moments when they arise so we can use a common language and reinforce their importance together. We begin with S — Self-Direction: Take Ownership, Stay Focused, Keep Going. Students will work on setting goals, managing tasks and deadlines, staying focused, and showing resilience. These are not simply school skills; they are skills students will carry with them into high school, the workplace, relationships, and everyday life.

Ways Families Can Encourage Self-Direction

Families can help by creating everyday opportunities for students to practice independence. Ask, “What is your goal, and what is your plan for getting there?” Encourage students to use calendars or reminders to manage responsibilities and deadlines, and when they encounter a challenge, ask “What have you tried? What could you try next?” rather than immediately solving the problem for them. Give students appropriate choices, gradually hand over responsibilities such as preparing for school or completing chores, and celebrate perseverance when things do not go as planned. Finally, encourage reflection by asking, “What worked? What would you do differently next time?” These simple conversations and experiences help students take ownership of their actions and become more confident, independent learners.

Ms. Gifford Classes Investigate

Students are investigating what the material is in the middle of the box model. Is it glass, a mirror, a one-way mirror? Each group experimented with changing one aspect of the original box model (colored lights, more light, less light, ect.).

ELA Reading Homework

Students will be bringing home reading books as part of their ELA homework. These books are an important part of our reading work, so we ask that families help students keep them in a safe place at home and return them to school when requested.
If a book is lost or damaged beyond use, families will be responsible for replacing the book. If this happens, please let your child’s ELA teacher know so we can provide the title and information needed to replace it. Thank you for helping us make sure these books are available for students to use throughout the year!

Important Nurse Update

As we begin the school year, we want families to be aware that KMS does not currently have a  school nurse. Students will report to the Main Office for minor illnesses or injuries. For more significant health concerns or emergencies, we will follow our established procedures and contact families and/or emergency medical services as appropriate.
Please take a moment to review and update your child’s health information, emergency contacts, medications, and other important information in PowerSchool. Having accurate and up-to-date information is especially important as we work to ensure we can respond appropriately to student health needs.

After-School Athletic Event Supervision

We want all of our students to be able to enjoy and support our KMS athletic teams! Please remember that students who stay after school to attend an athletic event must be supervised by a responsible adult.
Students may not remain on school grounds after the school day without adult supervision.
Any student found on campus after school without a responsible adult will be asked to call home and make arrangements to be picked up.
Thank you for helping us keep our students safe and ensuring that after-school activities remain a positive experience for everyone!

Supporting Healthy Habits

KMS is a proud partner of the Let's Go! 5210 program supporting healthy eating and active living!

For many, back to school means back to routines. But healthy habits don't build themselves- they require planning ahead. One way to support your family's fall routine is to practice healthy sleeping habits.
