As we settle into the school year, I want to take a moment to highlight the importance of regular school attendance and being on time each day. Consistent attendance helps students stay connected with their learning, build strong relationships with teachers and peers, and feel confident as they progress through the year. Arriving on time sets a positive tone for the day and allows students to fully participate in all classroom activities.
We understand that occasional absences and tardiness are sometimes unavoidable, but we encourage you to make every effort to have your child in school and on time each day. Your support makes a big difference in helping students develop responsibility and get the most out of their school experience.
Please see the attendance procedures below. They can also be found in our Student Handbook.
Thank you for partnering with us to support your child’s success. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about our attendance procedures.

Parents may excuse their students up to three times per quarter (K-8) or six times per semester (9-12) with parental notification to their child’s school in accordance with the reasons listed in Policy JH:
- Illness
- Recovery from an accident
- Required court attendance
- Medical and dental appointments
- Death in the immediate family
- Observation or celebration of a bona fide religious holiday
- Such other good cause as may be acceptable to the Principal or designee or permitted by Law

|
For student absences exceeding the maximum number of days considered "excused," parental notifications must be supported by official documentation ie. a doctor, dentist, court/legal notification, or other appropriate provider. Otherwise, absences will be considered unexcused. Five unexcused absences is considered truancy per RSA 189:35-a.
Truancy is defined as any unexcused absence from class or school. Any absence that has not been excused for any of the reasons listed above will be considered an unexcused absence. Ten half-days of unexcused absence during a school year constitutes habitual truancy. A half-day absence is defined as a student missing more than two hours of instructional time and less than three and one-half hours of instructional time. Any absence of more than three and one-half hours of instructional time shall be considered a full-day absence. The Principal or Truant Officer is hereby designated as the District employee responsible for overseeing truancy issues.

Students may be excused for being tardy to school by a parent/guardian up to two times per quarter. Beyond this limit, medical or court documentation is required for the tardy to be considered excused. If a student accumulates three unexcused tardies in a quarter, school discipline may be assigned. A plan for intervention will be developed for a student who is habitually tardy to school including, but not limited to, formal letters added to the student's cumulative file and sent home via mail and meetings with the student, parent/guardian, counselor, and School Resource Officer (if applicable).

- Attendance records are monitored to identify students who have reached the maximum five days absent. These students are considered truant.
- For students identified as truant, a letter is added to the student’s cumulative file and sent via mail to parents/guardians detailing the dates of their child’s truancies, contact information for assistance, a statement of the parent/guardian responsibility to ensure that the student attends school and education regarding state and local truancy laws and legal procedures. After ten (10) days truant, a second letter is added to the student’s cumulative file and sent via mail to the parent/guardian. A meeting will be set up with the student, parents/guardian, counselor, School Resource Officer (if applicable), and the school administration or designee. A plan will be developed to improve the student’s attendance.
- Should a student continue to be truant, legal action may be taken and/or the school may seek assistance from other outside agencies. Absenteeism of 25% or more is reportable to the NH DHHS Division of Children, Youth and Families.

Generally, absences during the school year are discouraged. The Principal or their designee may, however, grant approval of absence for family vacations/educational opportunities, provided a Planned Absence form is submitted at least two (2) weeks in advance to the school administration. Students are responsible for gathering work, in advance, for planned vacations and educational opportunities. It is the discretion of the school administration to deny a request for extended absences.
For absences extending beyond two consecutive weeks, parents/guardians must contact the Principal at least 30 days prior in order for alternative plans to be developed.
